Serizawa tells Ford and the Navy crew that creature seems to be trying to communicate with another giant creature. Another creature? Everyone takes this news pretty calmly. We get a review of the nuclear detonations from the opening credits, adding in some cool teasing shots of a monster with spines. Apparently all those nuclear tests we’ve all grown up seeing in movies and history books weren’t tests at all. They were trying to kill Godzilla!! My whole life feels like a sham now. Everything I thought I knew has been turned upside down. I refocus long enough to hear more exposition about the history of Godzilla and assumptions that he’s still around. Then, with perfect timing on Godzilla’s part, we see him! Well, we see his spiny back, anyway. The Navy follows him. I have to admit, it’s a pretty cool effect to see the shot of Godzilla swimming along flanked in warships and carriers.
Meanwhile, back at home, Elle sees the news of the “earthquake” in Japan. She starts calling … and, I have to point out here that she is wearing scrubs. Of course, she is a doctor. Have there ever been any action or spy thriller movies yet where the main star’s girlfriend/wife/fiancée is not a doctor? Anyway, she starts to freak out when she can’t get hold of her husband on the phone. Which leads me to think…for probably the fourth time in the movie so far…Ford has been in relatively calm circumstances many times. Not once did he think to pick up the phone and call, or shoot a quick email/text to his wife to let her know he’s okay? Oh wait, I take it back. Here is a scene where Elle is giving their son a bath, and her phone is vibrating away in the foreground. Because of course if you were just dying to hear from your husband-in-danger, you would leave your phone on silent mode. Sigh.
