The little boat’s power comes back on (I love the random lengths of the EMP outages in this movie) and Ford gets it pointed out to sea.  In a weird sequence, he seems to be just crumpling in exhaustion and resignation, but the actor again just doesn’t quite get it right.  Shortly thereafter, a helicopter is pulling him up to safety.  We draw back to watch the nuclear detonation out over the water.

I have to try to think this through…or maybe I don’t.  But I could have sworn that when Ford finally realized he couldn’t disarm the bomb, the timer had just over 5 minutes left.  In that 5 minutes, Ford had time to have his little meltdown, a helicopter located him as the last survivor and picked him up, then was able to retreat to a safe enough distance to not be affected by the nuclear explosion that was supposedly strong enough to kill three monsters.  And also…how far away from the city did that tiny little boat manage to get in those five minutes?  You know?  I’ll just roll with it.

It’s now the next day.  Godzilla’s “corpse” is lying in the street being circled by sea gulls.  Probably also being circled by concerned Department of Sanitation officials who are trying to figure out how on earth they’ll clean this up.  Ford has tracked down his son at a shelter in one of the stadiums.  Sam spots Elle in the crowd and she runs to him and gives him a hug; then she sees Ford and literally pushes her son aside and is crying and kissing her husband.  Good grief.  This movie really values spousal relationships over child-parent ones, doesn’t it?  All right, never mind.  The family is happy and back together.  No mention of old dad who died on the way over.

Serizawa and Graham are checking out Godzilla’s body and they look pretty gloomy.  But wait!  Suddenly Godzilla snuffles and starts to get up.  Nobody really panics.  I really didn’t notice people bothering too much to get out of the way either.  There is now a lot of faith in the community for Godzilla.

Godzilla dives into the ocean (not creating a tsunami or any other water-displacement problem) and swims away.  Graham has her hand over her mouth like she could cry with happiness at any moment.  It’s supposed to be touching, but it really just seems silly.  But, the crown-cheese of the movie:  news reports saying “King of Monsters Saved the City!” and people cheering.

So…what did you think of the movie?
