A helicopter appears overhead for some reason. I say ‘some reason’ because the father/son sleuth team is intercepted by Japanese ground security and are loaded up on trucks to be driven to the ex-nuclear plant. Helicopters swooping around just make a scene more intense, I suppose. Hey, it’s Serizawa and Graham! They’re still on the trail of unidentified enormous creatures. There is a big …something …sticking up out of the ground where the old reactor used to be. Joe is whisked off to be interrogated, spout clichés about “ending up in the Stone Age”, and generally come across as a bit of a weirdo. Graham manages to get a word in edgewise and confirms that their current data seems to match up with the data he collected years ago. Joe is the only one who knows what happened. Only him!
EMPs are once again knocking out electronics, just like what happened before. Serizawa decides to “kill the system.” The brilliant plan is to send a huge surge of electricity into the weird cone-like object to destroy whatever it is. Unfortunately, all that accomplishes is hatching the thing. An enormous creature with lots of legs leaps out and sends out another EMP that shuts down the whole place. (Full disclosure: I have to admit that I did not go into this movie knowing that there were multiple monsters and I honestly believed, for an embarrassingly long few minutes, that this creature was the 2014 version of Godzilla). People start running around and screaming, as is the norm when a monster appears.
All the time that Joe was being interrogated, that Serizawa was considering and executing the “kill it” plan, and the electricity was built up and aimed at the cocoon, and the creature came out…Ford has been sitting locked up in a security truck. An empty security truck. Not kidding. Ford watches people being tossed about and squished all over the place. His expression is very bland. He yells for someone to let him out, but no one is around. Conveniently, a heavy piece of building hits the truck, smashes it just so, and Ford is able to scramble free. He spies Joe, who is up on a bridge and staring down at him. The bridge collapses, Joe falls, Ford screams, and the giant insect runs off.
