It’s morning. Ford is covered in mud and doesn’t really look terribly hurt. A military team has shown up to get the other nuke. Ford flags them down and gets a ride. The powers-that-be have decided to use the same plan, just with one nuke. The President – wow, I can’t believe we made it this far into a disaster movie without seeing him – approves the plan. How nice. Sirezawa makes some vague comment about man being arrogant thinking he can control nature. Then he says the best line in the whole movie: “Let them fight.”
He- and she-MUTO are still on their way to rendezvous in San Francisco. Godzilla – remember him? The one the movie is named for? – He is on his way there too. Seriously, at this point in the movie, Godzilla’s part has been basically a cameo. The Navy is still floating along with him and for some reason it just makes me smile every time I see those scenes with the little naval ships and carriers being dwarfed by Godzilla’s giant spikes.
Ford finally gets Elle on the phone at the hospital, where she is importantly pushing a gurney in the ER, like doctors in movies always do. She’s thrilled to hear from him and can’t help crying. Ford promises that he is on his way, and then he tells her to wait for him! That’s right. The whole city is evacuating, they have a young child who should be gotten out of there like 20 minutes ago, and he wants her to just hang out and wait for him. So he can do what exactly? Ugh. She, of course, agrees. Thankfully, about fifteen minutes later she comes to her senses and … I just am cringing at this … puts her child on a bus with a coworker. Not so she can stay back and help sick patients or anything noble like that. No, she is going to wait for her husband. Never mind that three monsters that are bigger than most buildings are converging on that area. It’s more important that she hang out and wait for Ford than to go with their kid to make sure he is safe. And then, almost the very next scene, the busses are all stuck on the Golden Gate Bridge (is that really the only way out of town?). Police, soldiers, and tanks are all taking up space getting into position to ward off an attack.
